When I first started my poem I had a idea that I would start out with power because for some reason I had a bunch of ideas already flowing through my head. For my poem I had always had thoughts about power so when I learned that I would have the chance to do power I took the chance. I figured to go with the one that I had the best ideas for at the time I needed it. I had many ideas for how to connect it to the ideas I had for writing it out. I started with a basic start as just a bunch of ideas for what to add to my poem to make it good.
I took away a bunch and added some because the ideas just kept on flowing through my mind. It took me a few but I found a idea that I had already had in my poem. It was a metaphor that I had stretched out into almost all my stanzas, I latter was given the idea of caring that metaphor through out my entire poem so that it all connects together into one big metaphor. For my poem I made my stanzas then made the last line part of the metaphor so that they would connect to one.
The contents of my stanzas were similes, metaphors, or just a part that fits with my idea. So my poem still had parts that were not just part of the metaphor but it still has other parts to it.
It took me some time before I was able to make my poem truly good to read. But after having our group critiques it gave me a lot of help trying to come up with revisions and other ideas. For my poem I had to think deep to find ideas for how I wanted it to all connect together without having it just ramble on and on not getting any were. When I was able to get a main idea I was able to have ideas that could fallow the main idea to the end. I wanted to have it so that it would focus on one idea and not many because I wanted to have only one to focus on. This would help me so that I wasn’t spreading the point of my poem to different points. I wanted mine to have a straight idea so I can put all I can into it to make it as good as I can. I didn’t want my poem to be to scattered that people can’t understand my topic or the point that I am trying to make because that would take to much away from my work.
I took my time on my poem so that I can make it the best that it can be. I hit some bumps on the way to making my poem good but it is better then I had thought that I would have made. I worked hard to make the decisions that I had made to add and take away to make my poem good.

Power the Storm
Ashton Cornett
They have let the traitor called power into their lives
It has told them there are no consequences for what they do
They do what they want without ever thinking what can happen
A storm is growing ready to consume all fear in its path
The storm comes making people run in terror
No one is safe from the storm that sits above the weak
It haunts anyone that has experienced the horror
When the storm is seen you will know what is coming your way
Never run, the storm will catch you; never fight you will lose
It will follow you to the end even when you feel safe
It can never match the power of the people’s will to stand tall
The storm has been haunting people for ever, hungry for terror
If you rush into a battle without thought you create more distress
It fuels the storm to came faster and hungrier like a lion on the hunt
Never do people think they have it until it is to late
Running from the storm is feeding the storm to consume more,
Lose the concern and the storm will pass you by hunting for others
If you stop the horror completely the storm will fade into history
It never looks back on the ones suffering from its reign from above
To fight the storm you have to stop the flow of distress it gives
The storm drops nukes plummeting to the earth obliterating any peace
It stains all the peace in the world that has stood tall to the power
It will always be around every day life but when it starts to rise again
don’t fear the storm and it will dread you, obliterating its self and its power
Growth of a Poet
Ashton Cornett
My perspective I was trying to communicate in my poem had changed a lot from the first to the final draft. I would change little and big things as the project went on, have the critiques had help a lot because the would get my perspective would change. I had started out with how bad power was but had gotten the idea of changing it to making it so that it showed what affect that power would have on the people that are weak.
The first big change that I had was making the change of perspective on how power was on the lower people. This was big because it had changed every thing that I had thought of. But I feel that it had made it better in the end. In my early draft I had only focused on what power was. I felt that it had been not that descriptive on what power was. In my final draft I had it so that it was more descriptive and more informative for the reader. It had changed it to be better I feel because it was nicer to read and it had a good flow to it.
The second change was turning my entire poem into a metaphor. I had had it started it without knowing that I had started it. But when I was shown it I had turned it into a big metaphor so that it would all connect together. In my earlier draft I had already had it started all I had to do was add it to the rest of the paragraphs in the poem. In my final draft I had made it so that the last line of each stanza would have a part of the metaphor to connect it. It had made my project better from it being all connect and not scattered all over the poem.
The last change I had made was making my poem a free verse poem. At first I had planed to do a different way but I feel some of the things in the poetry rules would have changed to much of my poem. In my earlier draft I was sure what to do with my poem then I changed to being free verse so that I wouldn’t have to change to much in my poem so that it wouldn’t have been good. It would have made it so that my poem was scattered all over my poem.

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas
Ashton Cornett
Omelas Seminar Reflection
Part 1 Option 3
They walk to find a new life without he suffering that their past lives had for them to live with. These ones don’t know what they will find but they know what they want to and they don’t stop tell it is theirs. Some of these people don’t find the life they want but some are lucky enough to find a good life. People in Omelas think of these people to be gone for good and to never find a life that they wanted that doesn’t contain suffering to make the people around happy. The people who walk away weather or not they make it or not they are happy to be from the suffering that made the people of Omelas happy.
Part 2
The difference between the ones who stay and the ones who walk away from Omelas is that one doesn’t mind the suffering of one and the ones who walk away feel that it is wrong and try to find some where else to live. The ones who stay in Omelas seem to not be bothered that their happiness is based of the suffering of one child. The ones who leave the town of Omelas are the ones who feel that it is wrong to base their happiness off the suffering of this child. They say that if this child is released that it would cause the beauty of Omelas to wither away and be destroyed. Both sides have there own opinion on what is happening in their town but both are very far from the same.

Global Village Reflection

Seminar Reflection
One thing that made me think the most was when we got on the topic of religion being part of your culture and your identity. This made me think what about the people that don’t have a religion, dose this mean that they don’t have a full identity. This idea focused I feel mostly on the people that actually feel that their religion was a big part of what their beliefs in their identity. I made this reaction to this piece because I don’t have a religion so it made me think what about the people like me were we have no religion. This was a thought for me that without religion do people not have a full identity. Some people don’t have a full idea that if religion is actually a part of your religion or not.
I feel when he talks about the globalization of the world and the identity I feel he is saying that the identity of the people that experience globalization are starting to deplete. People are starting to believe that if they move to a part of America that is like China they become Chinese. This would be depleting the identity of those people that believe that this is true for them. If this was true then identities would be almost gone, all the people that go to America and see all the different cultures would not be one thing they would be many making it so that they would not know their true identity.
In this peace Ayer is showing globalization as a good thing that we should think is good for the world to come together. He talks about everyone becoming one race which could be good or it could ruin the world because their would be no difference in people we would not have any identity. All would be the same the identity of these people would be just a name they would not have a primary race or ethnicities. People would not know what they could be if their was at least a little diversity between the people.
Connections for the piece for me was to the book Brave New World. Reading this text when it started to talk about all people be alike each other it made me think about how in BNW the people were supposed to be the same but they still had difference. This was supposed to be a utopia but it became a dystopia. I feel this is what this world that Ayer is explaining is the beginning of a world like BNW. This text was very alike to the idea of BNW both are trying to become one big group but there will still be groups of people life behind in the progression of the world. In BNW there are groups of people who are still different and have not progressed like the rest of the world, in the text it talks about people being isolated and staying that way even as the world changes the way it is.
The cartoon that I drew was the top of the world with some people on top of it say that they are united as one and there is a couple of people on the side saying that they were isolated so they were left behind. What I was trying to show in this picture was that the people on top were all connected from the mixture of race and countries trying to be like others. The people on the side were to show that the people who were isolated were more or less left behind when the rest of the world was progressing. I was going for the idea that if you are not with everyone else and have not had contact with other people they will be left behind when every one else is moving on and becoming one with each other.

Genocide Project
Chemical Killing of The Kurds
Why would anyone use chemicals to kill their own people. These people never knew what was happening, people just started to fall over dead if they were that lucky some people suffered before they died. Most of these people were civilians, women and children going on with their every day lives till the gases dropped into town. The bombing started as a anti-insurgent campaign, but the Iraqis started to bomb cites that contained mostly civilians like Halabja.
The chemical bombing of the Kurdish people, once started there was no going back. Nothing to stop them, it was their people they were killing. It could have been stopped sooner but nothing happened, which made many suffer even today.
The bombing was unexpected by the people of Halabja. The people that lived in this town that had survived the bombing said that the gas had smelled of sweet apple. They said that people died in a number of ways from just dropping dead to burning and blistering and coughing up green vomit. Some even said that some had died laughing.
People believe that multiple chemicals were used to carry out the killing of 5,000 Kurdish people. This chemicals were thought to be mustard gas and a mixture of the nerve agents sarin, tabun, and VX. The chemicals sarin, tabun, and VX were all nerve agents All of these chemicals that were used were outlawed for production or stockpiling by the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993. After the town was taken from the Iranian and Kurdish rebels the Iraqi troops came in wearing NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) suit to study how affective their bombing was on the town.
This chemical bombing is the largest chemical attack directed to civilian population in history. The people who made it out alive weren’t safe because 1,000s of people died from disease and birth defects in the years after the bombing. Doctors are seeing lasting genetic impact on the Kurdish population. These problems are mostly from birth defects, but it is shown that there are higher percent of medical disorders in Halabja like miscarriages, cancers, respiratory aliments, skin and eye problems, fertility and reproductive disorders are measurably higher then other areas caught in chemical attacks.
Even though in Halabja the chemicals had contaminated the food, water, soil and animal populations they still moved back to make it their homes once again so that they can live their lives again. This was their homes they want to live were they once lived before this devastating act of genocide. These affects have lasted a long time killing the people that had come back to Halabja and the people that were their.
In the end neither Saddam Hussein or his cousin Ali Hassan al-Majid were charged by Iraqi Special Tribunal for crimes against humanity related to the events in Halabja. People that had been present at the time of the attack in Halabja were starting to lose confidence that there was going to be any justice for what they had done. They didn’t think that the innocents that were killed would be able to rest in peace knowing that the people that had caused so much pain and killed so many.
This attack started on March 16, 1988, it lasted for five hours. It started out with rocket and napalm attacks. Then Iraq MiGs and Mirages started to drop gas canisters on to the unsuspected town. This was at the end of the Iran-Iraq war, the Iraq high Criminal Court didn’t even recognize the bombing of Halabja as a genocide until March 2010. For 22 years this wasn’t a genocide.
This one genocide that killed so many Kurdish people but could have been stopped sooner, before it was to late to do anything. They were all ready killing their own people to try to stop a few rebels. What this was the was the mindless killing of their own people. This was just to kill a few insurgents. All it did was make things worse for people that had lived in the areas that were hit by chemical attacks.

Project Reflection
In this project I learned about the Kurdish genocide and decided to focus on the chemical bombing that had taken place during the genocide. For this when I wrote my paper I focused on what happened during the genocide and what the after effects of it that are still hurting people. I wanted to write something that would show people what these people had gone through. I tried to make it so that my paper showed what happened and to make it so that people would think about it.
For my cartoon from the first draft you can see many changes to my final draft. Some major changes were that before I did stick people but now I actually tried to make people that were good and didn’t look like a little kid drew it. Also with my final draft of my picture I had nothing to help the reader understand what was going on in my picture. This was things like symbolism, and dialog things that help the reader understand the contents of what they are looking at. I have grown by making it so that the viewer could look at my cartoon and understand what was happening.
This writing that I did was different from writings that I had done before by it having word restrictions, most of my writings that I have done before were write as much as you could not you can only write between 750-1000 words. Most of my writings that I have done before made it so that I could spread out my info more but this one has made it so that I had to try to go with only the most important info so that I still have room for evidence. This writing will help me if I ever need to compress my writing more then I need to.
Truth of War Project
Final Draft Essay
Ashton Cornett
The Fight of a Soldiers Life
War, has had a negative effect on both sides of the battle field, through out time. During war, injuries happen to both not just our side of war that could ruin a soldiers life whether it is mentally or physically. Both sides of war can be injured in ether of these ways. When we think of a soldier being hurt we think he has a physical injury, but they can be hurt in more ways then just one. Even the people we think are bad suffer just as we do from the lose of a loved ones. The truth of war for a soldier is that they face many negative effects from war, but one effect they don’t expect to face is the realization that the enemy soldiers are the same.
A soldier can be hurt in a matter of minutes even if it is physically, he can have his life ruined. When a soldier leaves home to go to war they know they run the risk of being hurt and possible ruining their life. A soldier going into war has the risk of being hurt, but being hurt is only part of what happens to a soldier when he is hit. This doesn’t happen to every soldier but some go through mental problems after. “It is going badly with Albert. They have taken him and amputated his leg. The whole leg has been taken off from the thigh. Now he will hardly speak any more. Once he says he will shoot himself the first time he can get hold of his revolver again” (Remarque 261-262) This quote shows how being injured bad enough it can cause a soldier to want to just get away from everything and end it all. Some men don’t believe that there is anything to live for if they lost their leg. The physical state of a soldier leads to more severe things like being mentally hurt.
The mental state of a soldier can be altered by many things in war, whether it be an injury or just something that scared him into remembering it for the rest of his life. It is like when a soldier has the risk of being physically hurt they run the same risk of being mentally hurt. what he had experienced during WWII. When Billy went home he didn’t really care about anything, but he had a flashback to when he was young he was talking about the time that his dad was throwing him into the pool and he was scared. After war nothing seemed to bother him and when someone would die he would say “so it goes”
(Vonnegut) like it just happens. Billy’s daughter was affected by him not caring about anything, she was worried about him most of the time.
Everyone is affected by war whether you are the soldier fighting in the war or just a family member. Family is affected because they don’t know how their loved ones are doing. This one of the few things that a soldier runs the risk of not coming home or having his family not knowing were he is and if he is OK. Another possibility is when a soldier comes home to his loved ones he could feel out of place at home again this is like in the book AQotWF when the main character Paul goes home for leave and feels out of place after being on the front for so long (Remarque) Some soldiers get mentally injured this could affect his family because he would not be the same as when he left. He could have been affected to the point that he can snap and freak out and hurt him self or someone that he loves. This doesn’t just happen to us but the people that we are fighting against.
Have you ever thought about what the mental and physical state of the people that we fight against? To me they would suffer in the same way as we do, maybe even more then us. We think that we are the ones who suffer the most from wars but what about the people who lost everything to one war, these people don’t have a chose of where the war is going to happen either in their backyard or the next town over. They lose loved ones just like we do, they are not heartless people. In All Quiet on the Western Front the main character Paul is a German soldier in WWII and he kills a French soldier with a knife and later finds in the man’s coat that he had been writing home to his family and he says to the man “why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony -Forgive me, comrade how could you be my enemy?”(Remarque 223) this was Paul saying this to the wounded French soldier. They suffer all the same as us and we just act like nothing is wrong.
No matter who you are whether you are an American or the enemy that we are fighting war against. War will find you even after you think that it is gone. War will haunt any soldier that has experienced war and has found his truth of war and what it is like to experience war itself.

Project Reflection
1. In this project we started out with reading the books All Quiet on the Western Front and Slaughterhouse 5. This led us up to our truth of war project were we made our project on how we wanted our project to represent the truth of war to a soldier. Like in my project I chose how both sides of war more alike then they want to believe. In my essay I talked about how both sides can be hurt mentally or physically hurt at any minute. In this project I learned is that a soldier lays down his life and knows that is what he is during but that it is for his country.
2. The habit of heart and mind that I used the most on my project was perseverance because at first I had no idea what to do for a poster. After some time of looking over what I have as a essay then I thought of the idea I take a soldier from both sides of war and have them looking at their flag. Then I came up with the idea of putting the world behind the flags so that it looks like the soldiers are looking through their flags to the world. This took a couple tries but I felt that I could do it and that it would work.
3. The revisions that I made to my essay ended up making my essay much easier to under stand. Also before my revisions were made my paragraph that was before my conclusion seemed like it kind of came out of no were because my perspective statement was not connected to that paragraph but I wanted to keep it. So I ended up changing my perspective statement to make it fit right.
4. If I had another week I would make my essay have more detail to go with my poster because I talked about it more then I had on my essay. This would make it better because then I would have had a better idea of what to say to people that have questions for me. For my poster I would have made it so that it showed what I was talking about so that what I'm showing rather then me explaining it they could have just looked at it.
